Technical meetings "Geotechnics in tunnel design and construction"

The Basque Institute of Geologists organized these technical meetings with the intention of using the experience gained in tunnel construction, and particularly those built for the South Metropolitan By-Pass of Bilbao, which posed considerable geotechnical and construction challenges, as an aspect of training, teaching, study and public presentation.

Euroestudios took part in these meetings as a collaborating company. On 25 June, Marcelo Usabiaga, head of Euroestudios Geotechnical Department in San Sebastián, gave a conference on tunnel entrances in difficult cases.

Practical - theoretical course on tunnel fires

The course is aimed at technicians working on the design, construction, fitting out, operation and supervision of tunnels, whether in the employ of the authorities or consulting, building or supply companies. The course serves as theoretical introduction to the problems of tunnel fires and provides a practical element at the San Pedro de Anes Tunnel Research installations.

The course provides both the theoretical aspects necessary to comprehend the factors influencing tunnel fires and their detection and control, and the practical aspects, by an experimental fire and testing of a ventilator at high temperature.

Juan Manuel Sanz, head of Euroestudios Transport Infrastructure Department, will participate in the course with a talk on fire detection and video monitoring.

Venue: San Pedro de Anes (Asturias)
Dates: 6 - 8 May 2009
